The Art of Making and Using Kumkumadi Oil at Home-1
Kumkumadi Taila, also known as Kumkumadi Oil or Kumkumadi Thailam, is a traditional Ayurvedic oil used for skin care. It is believed to have several benefits, including improving skin complexion, reducing blemishes, and promoting overall skin health. Making Kumkumadi Taila at home is possible, but it requires sourcing specific ingredients, patience, and careful preparation. Here’s how to make it and how to use it:
Ingredients:
Saffron strands (Kesar) – 1 gram
Red Sandalwood (Rakta Chandan) powder – 1 gram
Manjistha (Indian Madder) powder – 1 gram
Licorice (Yashtimadhu) powder – 1 gram
Turmeric (Haldi) powder – 1 gram
Lotus pollen (Kamal Kesar) – 1 gram
Vetiver (Khus) root – 1 gram
Sesame oil – 100 ml
Coconut oil – 100 ml
Instructions:
Start by collecting the dry herbs and spices. You can purchase these ingredients from an Ayurvedic store or online.
Grind the saffron strands into a fine powder and keep them aside.
In a clean, dry glass jar or container, mix the following powders: Red Sandalwood, Manjistha, Licorice, Turmeric, and Lotus pollen. This is your herbal powder blend.
Cut the Vetiver roots into small pieces and set them aside.
In a heavy-bottomed pan, mix the sesame oil and coconut oil.
Add the herbal powder blend and Vetiver root pieces to the oil mixture.
Heat the oil mixture on low heat and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Stir occasionally.
The oil is ready when it turns a reddish-golden color and the herbal powders and Vetiver have been infused into the oil. Be careful not to overheat the oil, as this can damage the active compounds in the herbs.
Once the oil has cooled down, strain it using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the solid herbal residues.
Add the saffron powder to the strained oil and mix well. This will give your Kumkumadi Taila a beautiful golden color.
Store the Kumkumadi Taila in a clean, airtight glass container, away from direct sunlight, and use it within 3-6 months.
How to Use:
Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry.
Take a few drops of Kumkumadi Taila on your fingertips.
Gently massage the oil onto your face and neck in upward, circular motions.
Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.
Wash your face with lukewarm water.
It’s best to use Kumkumadi Taila regularly, ideally before bedtime. Over time, it may help improve skin texture, reduce blemishes, and give you a more radiant complexion. However, it’s important to do a patch test to ensure you don’t have any allergies or sensitivities to the ingredients. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use. Consult a dermatologist or Ayurvedic practitioner if you have specific skin concerns..
